Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia and unlike most of the mainland has four distinct seasons. But even on the hottest days in summer Tasmanians will usually take a coat in the back of their car because of the cold Antarctic blasts that come up from the south pole; they can however be over as soon as they happen! Tasmania does have two ski resorts that operate sporadically and also more national park reserve than any other state in Australia covering 1.4 million hectares. A pass for the national parks costs $20 per car or $10 per person. For the best bush walking areas in Tasmania visit tourist information when you arrive.
Tasmania also has caves to investigate and are open to the public daily. Kayaking, canoeing and white- water rafting are also popular activities if your feeling adventurous. If you've been dying to do this for a while rock climbing and abseiling are also on the list! aardvarkadventures
Hobart is settled between mountains on the east coast so beautiful views are all around. The city is quite small and quaint. If you walk along the harbour front you will be in Salamanca Place; take a look at the fine architecture that dates back to the early nineteenth century.
Tasmanian Devils are a protected species at present because they have a cancer that is threatening their existence. No Tasmanian devil is to be transported to the mainland in order to protect the devils on the mainland from the cancer.
If you don't want to hire a car there are day tours through various companies or you can take a cruise which will sail in and around the harbour; on a hot sunny day the sea air will be very welcome. Tasmania is a beautiful place with some extraordinary wildlife; well worth coming if you want to get in touch with the organic world!

There's not that much choice in Hobart. At the waterfront area there are some barges that offer takeaway; nice for a picnic! It's better to stay near the waterfront and Salamanca when looking for places to eat. Most places have a laid back feel to them; Sugo on Salamanca Square is quite nice if you’re looking for pasta. There are many good pubs to eat in or the casino at Battery Point has several restaurants and bars
Hobart is not known for its night life so do not expect a wild evening, you will probably find yourself propped up at a bar until it shuts!
