Barcelona guide

Barcelona is the capital city of Catalonia which sits on a beautiful mediterranean coast line. This stylish sunny city oozes with class and is a place for all ages. The promenade that cuts through Barcelona towards the sea is La Rambla. It stretches for almost a mile and is a convenient place to stay to have access to the major sites. You will find entertainment galore both on the streets with human statues, dancers and acrobats, in the market (Mercat de la Boqueria) and in the opera house (Gran Teatre del Liceu). Off La Ramble is the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic) which is the heart of old medieval Barcelona. The streets are very dark and narrow and you will find a huge gothic cathedral (La Seu) and a royal palace (Palau Reial). Spend time to admire the buildings and look out for the gargoyles!

To the north of the Gothic Quarter is a temple called Sagrada Familia (on Carrer de Mallorca). This enormous masterpiece is a sight not to be missed. The great spires can be seen all over the city and are the essence of Barcelona style. Work on the Sagrada Familia has been on and off over the years but recommenced in the 1950's.

the north-east of Sagrada Familia is a relaxing place called Park Guell (on Carrer d'Olot). The entrance to the park has a beautiful staircase where a dragon sits on guard. Within the park is the Hall of Hundred Columns and a museum which was Gaudi's house. You can see views across the city from here.

For sport fanatics Camp Nou is a football fans 'must' to go to. It is out of the way so you would be advised to take public transport (tourist information with be able to assist you with timetables). Tours of the ground are possible on selected days otherwise on match days you will be able to hear the crowds shouting 'Visca el Barca' ( up with Barca).
